Chip maker Marvell announced a prototype 10″ tablet, running on their new low-power Armada 618 chip, focused on the education market (textbooks).  Some of the touted features are gigahertz-class processor speed, 1080p full-HD encode and decode, intelligent power management, power-efficient Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM/GPS connectivity, high performance 3D graphics capability and support for multiple software standards including full Adobe Flash, Android™ and Windows Mobile.

All this for $99?  Is it really all about the Hamilton’s?  Will this be a problem for the, yet released, $499 Apple iPad?

We’ll have to see how these two devices stack up against each other as far as content and usability.   But the key for schools (and people), in this cash-strapped economy, may very well be the $99 price point.  Although, only a final product will determine if the $99 price is actually realistic.  Many of these devices, once they are officially released, are often double the estimate.

It’s going to be very interesting.
