Without a doubt, Kodak is the most recognizable name in photography.  And there are lots and lots of digital camera choices out there to choose from.  Kodak’s products have always been easy to use, built upon the “you press the button, we do the rest” heritage, they have been incorporating their SHARE technology in order to make those memorable images available to you.  You can take loads of pictures, but being able to make them usable is the holy grail of modern-day family photography.  Whether it is printing them at home, printing them at a kiosk or online, sending them to a photo frame, or sending them via e-mail, they have always focused on making this process fast and easy.

In the new line of products unveiled this week (M580, Playsport Video Camera, Pulse Digital Frame, SLICE, Z981, and new printers), the 14MP Kodak Slice Touchscreen Compact Digital Camera displays the next evolution in that pursuit.  The team at Kodak is always reinventing itself, and this camera is an indication that they are looking ahead.  This model is taking a shot right across the bow of the $349.00 10MP Sony Cyber-shot® Digital Camera TX1.   Kodak’s Share and Tagging functions (Facebook, Kodak Gallery, Flickr, and YouTube), the 2GB of on-board storage, 3.5″ LCD, plus the 14 megapixel sensor, spells bad news for Sony.

Some of the great new features are:

  • Intuitive 3.5-inch, 16:9 LCD touchscreen with anti-reflective coating
  • KODAK SLICE Search Feature and Face Recognition to easily sort, locate and share pictures
  • Share Button for easy upload to Facebook, KODAK Gallery, Flickr, YouTube sites and e-mail
  • Pictures can also be tagged to email or to send directly to the new KODAK PULSE Digital Frame
  • Store up to 5,000 pictures in HD resolution (2GB of on-board storage)
  • Stunning image quality with a 14MP sensor and 5X SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH Lens
  • Built-in optical image stabilization
  • 720p/30fps HD video capture
  • Kodak’s exclusive Smart Capture feature, which analyzes scenes and automatically adjusts camera settings to deliver beautiful pictures more often
  • Compatible with PC or APPLE iLife Software
  • Li-Ion rechargeable battery included (KLIC-7000)
  • KODAK USB AC adapter for in-camera charging
  • Uses a MicroSDHC memory card.  (You can pick up a 4GB card online for $6-12, including the converter cartridge, so this is really no big deal)

The KODAK SLICE Touchscreen Camera will be available in black, nickel, and radish for $349.95 MSRP beginning in April 2010. Best Buy will initially be the exclusive retailer for in-store sales. The KODAK SLICE Touchscreen Camera will also be sold online at Amazon.com and Kodak.com.

The most important things to look for when buying a compact digital camera are:

  • Size (shirt or pants pocket)
  • Facial Recognition
  • Auto-scene adjustment (technology to determine the White-balance /ISO settings)
  • Image Stabilization (optical)
  • HD Video (720p)
  • Ease of use (with a good set of automatic settings)
  • Availability for inexpensive extra Batteries and easy charging solutions
  • Picture quality (of course)

Summary:

I’m really looking forward to seeing how this camera performs.  Other than the lack of Geo-Tagging (something that we iPhoto users really love), the Kodak SLICE, looks like a real winner.  We’ll keep you posted!
