retrevoThe holy grail in Technology is finding the right product, at the right price, at the right time in a product’s life-cycle.  Retrevo tries to coordinate these different factors, and give customers a decent smattering of review site related to that product.

There are a few very cool parts of the site.  I really appreciate the ‘Hourly Bargain’, and the ‘Best Values’ sections right on the front page.  I also really dig the ability to search for your tech gear,  and add manuals to your ‘mymanuals’ section, if you sign-up.  Now, mind you, they don’t have manuals for every type of product.  In my case, I looked for my new Casio PAW1300-1V, but came up short.  HOWEVER, they did have a good mash-up of reviews for my watch, even though they had no ‘Real Time Review’ for the product line.

Speaking of Real Time Reviews, the different ways the site uses to evaluate a product are based on 4 factors it determines:

‹ Lifecycle: Whether it’s a new product or soon to be obsolete product
‹ Buzz: The level of interest and discussion about the product around the Web
‹ Sentiment: Every review on the web weighted and aggregated into one recommendation
‹ Value: Whether the product is good, fair or poor value for its current price

Check out what I found when I put my Sony KDF-42WE655:

If I had to make any critiques, it would be in a better review breakdown, and definitely a better shopping advisory section.  While they do have a shopping area (and I did buy a replacement lamp, btw- thanks!) that gives you a list of  stores, prices, and ratings on products they have full reviews of, this doesn’t carry over to products they don’t have full info on.  This would seem to be an easy update to make by simply taking the model number, doing a search, and plugging in the data.

Overall, the site does a really good job in presenting an overview of a product’s ‘tech-buyability’.  I will definitely come back before purchasing any new gear.

I’m off to add more manuals to my account…
